Until Grade 9, English is English. In Grade 10 it splits, and BC students choose from Composition 10, Literary Studies 10, Creative Writing 10, New Media 10 and Spoken Language 10. Schools offer different combinations, and students usually pick based on which teacher they have heard of.
It is worth a little more thought than that. All five carry the same credit and all five satisfy the requirement, but they build different skills, and one of them is a noticeably better run-up to English Studies 12.
Composition 10
The writing course. The curriculum covers text forms and genres, text features and structures, strategies and processes, and language features - with specific attention to language features, elements of style, exploration of voice, usage and conventions, literary elements and devices, and citation techniques.
If a student’s marks are being lost to sentence-level errors and weak structure rather than to ideas, this is the course that addresses it directly. It is also the closest preparation for the kind of writing English Studies 12 and first-year university expect.
Literary Studies 10
Close reading. The same four content headings, but with literal meaning and inferential meaning called out explicitly alongside style and literary devices.
This suits students who already write reasonably and need to get better at saying what a text implies rather than what it states. It is the more analytical of the two mainstream choices.
Creative Writing 10
Original composition across forms, with genuine attention to voice and style. Students enjoy it and often work harder in it than in the alternatives, which is not a trivial consideration.
It develops voice better than any of the others. It develops formal analytical writing less, so a student heading for a writing-heavy Grade 12 might pair it with Composition rather than take it alone.
New Media 10
Multimodal and interactive texts, with interactivity and the features of multimodal texts named in the curriculum, plus new media design processes and multimedia presentation processes. The analytical demands are the same as a literature course; the texts are different.
Students sometimes choose it expecting an easier ride. It is not easier. Citation and design process are assessed as carefully as the finished piece.
Spoken Language 10
Oral texts, rhetoric, persuasion and presentation, including First Peoples oral traditions and the protocols attached to them. Excellent for a student who is articulate but freezes on the page, and genuinely useful preparation for the oral components elsewhere in the curriculum.
How we would choose
Ask what is actually costing marks now.
- Weak sentences, thin paragraphs, careless conventions - Composition 10.
- Good writing, shallow reading - Literary Studies 10.
- Strong reader who will not write - Creative Writing 10 to get them writing at all.
- Confident speaker, anxious writer - Spoken Language 10.
All five feed into the same Grade 11 and 12 courses, so no door closes. But the two years before English Studies 12 are the cheapest place to fix a writing habit, and choosing the course that targets the actual weakness is free.
Two questions worth asking the English department
Course names are provincial; how a course is taught is local. Before choosing, two questions get a more useful answer than a course description:
- How much of the assessment in this course is timed writing, and how much is coursework produced over weeks? A student who writes well under pressure and a student who writes well with time are different students, and the same course can suit one and not the other.
- Which texts are studied? Literary Studies 10 in one school and Literary Studies 10 in another can be very different reading lists, and a student who has already read some of it starts ahead.
What carries forward to Grade 11 and 12
Composition 11 and Literary Studies 11 mirror the Grade 10 pair, and English Studies 12 draws on both: it asks for close reading of unfamiliar texts and for formal, cited writing about them. There is no course at Grade 10 that avoids either skill for long.
The practical consequence is that the Grade 10 choice determines which skill gets a year of deliberate attention first, not which one a student can skip.
If the marks are already slipping
A Grade 9 English mark that has drifted down is worth taking seriously before the Grade 10 choice is made, because the choice is easier when the weakness is known. In our experience the cause is one of three things: the student is not quoting, the paragraphs have no shape, or the writing is fine and the reading is shallow. Those point at different courses and different work.
Fifteen minutes with a marked essay usually identifies which one it is.
