Science Tutoring in Surrey
Grades 8 to 10 Science shapes how comfortable a student feels in Physics 11, Chemistry 11 and Biology 11. It is the year where good habits and a solid grounding pay off most clearly two years later.
Where Science Support Makes the Biggest Difference
Science 8 and 9
Building the habits and vocabulary that senior sciences assume are already there.
Science 10
The genuine bridge year, with physics, chemistry and biology units that preview all three senior courses.

Every Science Topic in the BC Curriculum, Grade by Grade
Below is every topic the B.C. Ministry of Education lists for each course, taken from the provincial curriculum itself rather than paraphrased. Open a course to see what it covers and where students most often lose marks.
Science 822 topics
Cells, the atomic model, light and plate tectonics. Four separate units with very little overlap, which is exactly why students revise unevenly.
- Characteristics of life
- Cell theory and types of cells
- Photosynthesis and cellular respiration
- The relationship of micro-organisms with living thingsbasic functions of the immune system; vaccination and antibiotics; impacts of epidemics and pandemics on human populations
- Kinetic molecular theory (KMT)
- Atomic theory and models
- Protons, neutrons, and quarks
- Electrons and leptons
- Types and effects of electromagnetic radiation
- Lightproperties; behaviours; ways of sensing
- Plate tectonic movement
- Major geological events of local significance
- First Peoples knowledge oflocal geological formations; significant local geological events
- Layers of Earth
Where marks are usually lost: Atomic theory. It is the first genuinely abstract idea in science and it underpins all of Chemistry 11.
Science 914 topics
Reproduction, the periodic table, electricity and the cycling of matter in ecosystems.
- Asexual reproductionmitosis; different forms
- Sexual reproductionmeiosis; human sexual reproduction
- Element properties as organized in the periodic table
- The arrangement of electrons determines the compounds formed by elements
- Circuits - must be complete for electrons to flow
- Voltage, current, and resistance
- Effects of solar radiation on the cycling of matter and energy
- Matter cycles within biotic and abiotic components of ecosystems
- Sustainability of systems
- First Peoples knowledge of interconnectedness and sustainability
Where marks are usually lost: Voltage, current and resistance. Circuits are the unit where students most often memorise formulas without a picture of what is happening.
Science 1020 topics
The course that decides which Grade 11 science a student is ready for. Genetics, chemical reactions, energy transformations and the universe.
- DNA structure and function
- Patterns of inheritance
- Mechanisms for the diversity of lifemutation and its impact on evolution; natural selection and artificial selection
- Applied genetics and ethical considerations
- Rearrangement of atoms in chemical reactions
- Acid-base chemistry
- Law of conservation of mass
- Energy change during chemical reactions
- Practical applications and implications of chemical processes, including First Peoples knowledge
- Nuclear energy and radiation
- Law of conservation of energy
- Potential and kinetic energy
- Transformation of energy
- Local and global impacts of energy transformations from technologies
- Formation of the universebig bang theory; components of the universe over time
- Astronomical data and collection methods
Where marks are usually lost: Balancing equations and the law of conservation of mass. Chemistry 11 starts from the assumption that these are automatic.
Life Sciences 11 (the course most people call Biology 11)22 topics
Cells, reproduction, viruses, evolution and taxonomy. The volume of vocabulary is the real difficulty, not the concepts.
- Levels of organization
- Cell structure and function
- Sexual and asexual reproduction
- Energy transformations in cells
- Viruses
- First Peoples understandings of interrelationships between organisms
- Microevolutionadaptation to changing environments; changes in DNA; natural selection
- Macroevolutionspeciation; processes of macroevolution; evidence for macroevolution
- Artificial selection and genetic modifications
- Single-celled and multi-celled organisms
- Trends in complexity among various life forms
- Evidence for phylogenetic relationships
- Taxonomic principles for classifying organisms
- Binomial nomenclature
- First Peoples knowledge on classification
- Similarities and differences between domains and kingdoms
Where marks are usually lost: Evolution. Students can define natural selection and still not be able to explain a specific example, which is what the exam asks for.
Chemistry 1115 topics
Bonding, organic chemistry, the mole, stoichiometry and solutions. The mole is the spine of the whole course.
- Quantum mechanical model and electron configuration
- Valence electrons and Lewis structures
- Chemical bonding based on electronegativity
- Bonds/forces
- Organic compounds
- Applications of organic chemistry
- The mole
- Dimensional analysis
- Reactions
- Stoichiometric calculations using significant figures
- Local and other chemical processes
- Green chemistry
- Solubility of molecular and ionic compounds
- Stoichiometric calculations in aqueous solutions
- Analysis techniques
Where marks are usually lost: Stoichiometry. Nearly every lost mark in Chemistry 11 is a mole conversion, a limiting reagent, or significant figures.
Physics 1118 topics
Kinematics, forces, energy, circuits, heat and waves. The first course where a correct method with a wrong number still earns most of the marks.
- Vector and scalar quantities
- Horizontal uniform and accelerated motion
- Projectile motion

How We Teach Science
Grades 8 to 10 is where good habits are cheap to build and expensive to skip. We work on units, notation, graph reading and genuine curiosity about why an experiment behaves as it does, the things Physics 11 and Chemistry 11 will simply assume in two years. More on tutoring in Surrey with OOTB.
Small Group, One-on-One or Exam Prep
Small-group science tutoring runs at $370 a month for four hours a week. One-on-one and exam preparation are $40 an hour, in person in Surrey or online over Zoom. Every new student starts with a $50 trial class. Compare all programs.
Science Tutoring Across Surrey, and Online
Science tutoring in Surrey runs from our centre at 8806 141A Street, for students in Grades 8, 9 and 10 from Newton, Fleetwood, Guildford, Cloverdale, City Centre and South Surrey. Grade 10 is the year that quietly decides which Grade 11 sciences are realistic.
Classes run 9:00am to 9:00pm seven days a week, which for younger students usually means one weekday slot and one at the weekend. Online students work with the same tutors over Zoom and cover the same units. We also teach students online in Vancouver, Burnaby, Delta and Langley.
Grades 8 to 10 are the cheapest place to fix a science problem, which is the honest argument for booking a science tutor in Surrey before Grade 11 rather than after. To book, call 604-725-6845. Every new student starts with a $50 trial group class, so you can see the teaching before committing to a term.
