Every year we get the same phone call from a Surrey parent. Their child needs Biology 12 for a university application, the school timetable says Anatomy and Physiology 12, and nobody is sure whether those are the same thing.
They are. British Columbia renamed the senior biology courses when the curriculum was redesigned. Biology 11 is officially Life Sciences 11, and Biology 12 is officially Anatomy and Physiology 12. Schools, students, parents and university admissions staff all still say Biology. The transcript says otherwise.
What Life Sciences 11 actually covers
The Ministry’s content list for Life Sciences 11 runs through levels of organization, cell structure and function, sexual and asexual reproduction, energy transformations in cells, viruses, First Peoples understandings of interrelationships between organisms, microevolution and macroevolution, artificial selection and genetic modification, single-celled and multi-celled organisms, trends in complexity among life forms, evidence for phylogenetic relationships, taxonomic principles, binomial nomenclature, First Peoples knowledge on classification, and the differences between domains and kingdoms.
In other words: cells, reproduction, evolution and the survey of life. It is broad rather than deep, and the difficulty is the sheer volume of vocabulary.
What Anatomy and Physiology 12 actually covers
Anatomy and Physiology 12 is a narrower and more demanding course: biological molecules, metabolism and enzymes, feedback loops and homeostasis, transport across cell membranes, DNA replication, gene expression, proteins and their relationship to cell structure and function, genomics and biotechnology, micro to macro organization, the organ systems and their interdependence, lifestyle and human health, a holistic approach to health, and disease as an imbalance in homeostasis.
The first half is molecular. The second half is systems. Students who expect the Grade 11 survey course to continue are usually surprised by how much biochemistry arrives in September.
Why the marks behave differently
Life Sciences 11 rewards organised memory. Anatomy and Physiology 12 rewards process reasoning. A student who did well in Grade 11 by learning definitions can find their Grade 12 mark drop without anything obvious changing, because the questions have stopped asking what something is and started asking how a sequence works and what happens when it is disrupted.
That is the single most common pattern we see in Grade 12 biology, and it is fixable. The fix is not more memorising. It is attaching the terminology to the process it belongs to, so there is something to reason from when a question arrives that the student has not seen before.
Which one do universities want?
Requirements vary by programme and change, so check the specific programme rather than relying on general advice, including ours. In broad terms, health science pathways in BC ask for Anatomy and Physiology 12 or its equivalent, usually alongside Chemistry 12. Life Sciences 11 is typically a prerequisite for the Grade 12 course rather than an admission requirement in itself.
The practical point for a Grade 10 or 11 student is that chemistry matters more to a biology application than most families expect. A strong Anatomy and Physiology 12 mark with a weak Chemistry 12 mark closes doors that a balanced pair would leave open.
Names on a transcript
If you are filling in an application form and the course names do not match, use the name on the transcript and let the institution map it. They do this constantly. The mismatch is a naming change, not a difference in content.
How the two courses are assessed differently
Life Sciences 11 assessments tend to be broad and recall-weighted: label this, define that, classify these. Anatomy and Physiology 12 assessments ask a student to explain a mechanism, predict what happens when it is disrupted, and connect two systems.
That difference explains a pattern we see every year. A student with an A in Grade 11 biology and a C in Grade 12 has not stopped working. They are still answering the Grade 11 question - what is it - when the paper is asking the Grade 12 question - how does it work and what happens if it fails.
The fix is not more revision hours. It is changing what revision consists of. Instead of re-reading notes, write the sequence of a process from memory, then check it. Instead of learning a definition, learn what goes wrong when that structure is damaged.
Science 9 and 10 as the run-up
Science 9 introduces mitosis and meiosis and human sexual reproduction. Science 10 introduces DNA structure and function, patterns of inheritance, mutation and natural selection, and applied genetics. Almost every molecular idea in Anatomy and Physiology 12 has a first appearance in those two years.
A student who found Grade 10 genetics confusing and moved on will meet the same material again in Grade 12, with less time and more assumed. That is worth catching in Grade 10, when it is a two-session conversation.
If chemistry is the real constraint
We say this to most biology families eventually: for health science pathways, the Chemistry 12 mark is usually the tighter constraint, not the biology mark. If both are being carried at once and something has to give, it is worth checking the actual entrance requirements before deciding which.
