How We Teach Math
We begin by establishing which foundations are secure, revisiting earlier material where it helps. With that base in place, new topics are learned quickly and retained.
In practice a first session is largely diagnostic. A student who is finding Pre-Calculus 11 heavy going is often perfectly capable of the new material and simply needs a few focused hours on fractions, negative exponents or factoring first. Working out which of those it is takes one session, and rebuilding it usually takes two or three more. After that the pace picks up noticeably, because the student is learning rather than decoding.
From there, sessions follow the sequence the school is teaching, so tutoring reinforces the class rather than running alongside it. We work through the current unit, the assessment that is coming, and the specific question types that unit is examined on. Students are asked to explain their reasoning out loud, because a method a student can describe is a method they still have in June.

Where a Math Tutor Makes the Difference, Grade by Grade
Grades 1 to 7. Number sense, times tables, fractions and decimals. This is the cheapest stage at which to fix anything, and the one with the longest payoff: a child who is fluent with fractions at eleven finds algebra at thirteen straightforward. Sessions here are short, frequent and heavy on practice.
Grades 8 to 10. The algebra years, and the point at which mathematics stops being arithmetic. Linear relations, polynomials, factoring and exponents all arrive quickly, and every one of them is used constantly in Grades 11 and 12. Grade 10 also carries a real decision, because Foundations and Pre-Calculus 10 and Workplace Mathematics 10 lead to different places.
Grades 11 and 12. Foundations of Math 11 and 12, and the Pre-Calculus stream that most university science, engineering, business and health programs expect. This is where marks start counting toward admission, so the work is as much about exam technique and timing as it is about the mathematics itself.
First-year university. We also tutor introductory Calculus for students already at UBC, SFU and the local colleges, which is often the same student coming back a year later.
Small Group, One-on-One or Exam Prep
Small-group math tutoring runs at $370 a month for four hours a week. One-on-one and exam preparation are $40 an hour, in person in Surrey or online over Zoom. Every new student starts with a $50 trial class. Compare all programs.
Math Tutoring Across Surrey, and Online
Math tutoring in Surrey runs from our centre at 8806 141A Street, and students travel to us from across the city: Newton, Fleetwood, Guildford, Cloverdale, City Centre and South Surrey. Classes run from 9:00am to 9:00pm seven days a week, so families can choose an after-school slot midweek or a longer weekend session before an exam period.
For families further out, the same tutors teach the same material live over Zoom. Online students follow the identical structure, work from the same materials and sit the same review questions, so a family in Langley or Delta is not receiving a lighter version of the class. We also tutor students online in Vancouver, Burnaby, Richmond and Coquitlam.
