Biology Tutoring in Surrey

Biology looks like a memorisation subject, and that is exactly why students underperform in it. The volume is enormous. Students who do well are the ones who understand the systems and the logic, so the terminology has something to attach to.

Who this helps

Where Biology Support Makes the Biggest Difference

Biology 11

Taxonomy, evolution and the survey of life: a lot of content, quickly.

Biology 12

Cell biology, biochemistry, genetics and human physiology at university-preparation depth.

Health pathway students

Anyone heading toward nursing, kinesiology, dentistry or medicine who needs biology marks to be strong.

Course by course

Every Biology Topic in the BC Curriculum

Below is every topic the B.C. Ministry of Education lists for each course, taken from the provincial curriculum itself. Note the names: in B.C., Biology 11 is officially Life Sciences 11 and Biology 12 is Anatomy and Physiology 12. Schools and universities still use the old names, so both appear here.

Science 914 topics

Reproduction, the periodic table, electricity and the cycling of matter in ecosystems.

  • Asexual reproductionmitosis; different forms
  • Sexual reproductionmeiosis; human sexual reproduction
  • Element properties as organized in the periodic table
  • The arrangement of electrons determines the compounds formed by elements
  • Circuits - must be complete for electrons to flow
  • Voltage, current, and resistance
  • Effects of solar radiation on the cycling of matter and energy
  • Matter cycles within biotic and abiotic components of ecosystems
  • Sustainability of systems
  • First Peoples knowledge of interconnectedness and sustainability

Where marks are usually lost: Voltage, current and resistance. Circuits are the unit where students most often memorise formulas without a picture of what is happening.

Science 1020 topics

The course that decides which Grade 11 science a student is ready for. Genetics, chemical reactions, energy transformations and the universe.

  • DNA structure and function
  • Patterns of inheritance
  • Mechanisms for the diversity of lifemutation and its impact on evolution; natural selection and artificial selection
  • Applied genetics and ethical considerations
  • Rearrangement of atoms in chemical reactions
  • Acid-base chemistry
  • Law of conservation of mass
  • Energy change during chemical reactions
  • Practical applications and implications of chemical processes, including First Peoples knowledge
  • Nuclear energy and radiation
  • Law of conservation of energy
  • Potential and kinetic energy
  • Transformation of energy
  • Local and global impacts of energy transformations from technologies
  • Formation of the universebig bang theory; components of the universe over time
  • Astronomical data and collection methods

Where marks are usually lost: Balancing equations and the law of conservation of mass. Chemistry 11 starts from the assumption that these are automatic.

Life Sciences 11 (the course most people call Biology 11)22 topics

Cells, reproduction, viruses, evolution and taxonomy. The volume of vocabulary is the real difficulty, not the concepts.

  • Levels of organization
  • Cell structure and function
  • Sexual and asexual reproduction
  • Energy transformations in cells
  • Viruses
  • First Peoples understandings of interrelationships between organisms
  • Microevolutionadaptation to changing environments; changes in DNA; natural selection
  • Macroevolutionspeciation; processes of macroevolution; evidence for macroevolution
  • Artificial selection and genetic modifications
  • Single-celled and multi-celled organisms
  • Trends in complexity among various life forms
  • Evidence for phylogenetic relationships
  • Taxonomic principles for classifying organisms
  • Binomial nomenclature
  • First Peoples knowledge on classification
  • Similarities and differences between domains and kingdoms

Where marks are usually lost: Evolution. Students can define natural selection and still not be able to explain a specific example, which is what the exam asks for.

Anatomy and Physiology 12 (the course most people call Biology 12)18 topics

Biological molecules, cell transport, DNA and gene expression, then every major organ system.

  • Biological molecules
  • Metabolism and enzymes
  • Feedback loops and regulation of the body\u2019s internal environment
  • Transport across a cell membrane
  • DNAthe cell\u2019s genetic information; replication
  • Gene expression
  • Proteins and their relationship to the structure and function of all cells
  • Genomics and biotechnology
  • Micro to macro organization
  • Organ systemsstructure and function; structural and functional interdependence; maintenance of homeostasis
  • Lifestyle differences and their effects on human health
  • Holistic approach to health
  • Disease as an imbalance in homeostasis

Where marks are usually lost: Gene expression and homeostasis. Both are processes, and process questions need a sequence, not a definition.

Chemistry 11 is a prerequisite for several health science programmes. It is covered on the chemistry tutoring in Surrey page.

How we teach it

How We Teach Biology

We give the terminology something to attach to. Learn how a process works and the vocabulary follows almost for free; learn the vocabulary alone and it evaporates by the exam. Students are pushed to explain mechanisms out loud, because that is what senior biology papers now ask for. More on tutoring in Surrey with OOTB.

Small Group, One-on-One or Exam Prep

Small-group biology tutoring runs at $370 a month for four hours a week. One-on-one and exam preparation are $40 an hour, in person in Surrey or online over Zoom. Every new student starts with a $50 trial class. Compare all programs.

Across Surrey

Biology Tutoring Across Surrey, and Online

Biology tutoring in Surrey runs from our centre at 8806 141A Street. Students come from Newton, Fleetwood, Guildford, Cloverdale, City Centre and South Surrey, and many are working towards nursing, kinesiology or medicine pathways where the Grade 12 mark matters.

Classes run 9:00am to 9:00pm seven days a week. Online students get the same tutors and the same structured notes over Zoom, which suits biology particularly well because so much of the work is organising terminology rather than working at a board. We also teach students online in Vancouver, Burnaby, Delta and Langley.

A note on the course names: in British Columbia, Biology 11 is officially Life Sciences 11 and Biology 12 is Anatomy and Physiology 12. Schools, universities and parents all still use the old names, and so do we. To book, call 604-725-6845. Every new student starts with a $50 trial group class, so you can see the teaching before committing to a term.

Questions

Biology Tutoring FAQs

My child memorises everything. Why do the marks not reflect that effort?
Because senior biology exams increasingly ask students to explain and apply, not recall. We teach the underlying systems so that recall becomes a by-product of understanding rather than the whole strategy.
Is Biology 12 harder than Biology 11?
Different rather than simply harder. Biology 11 is broad; Biology 12 is deep, and much more biochemical. Students who relied on memory in Biology 11 benefit from a different approach in Biology 12.
Do you help with genetics problems?
Yes. Genetics is one of the few genuinely problem-solving areas of biology and it responds very well to tutoring.
Do you teach biology in person in Surrey?
Yes, at our Surrey centre, and online.
Is Biology 11 the same thing as Life Sciences 11?
Yes. British Columbia renamed the courses: Biology 11 is officially Life Sciences 11 and Biology 12 is Anatomy and Physiology 12. Schools and universities still use the older names in conversation.
Do you cover the full BC Biology curriculum?
Yes, every topic the Ministry lists for Life Sciences 11 and Anatomy and Physiology 12, plus the biology units in Science 9 and 10. The complete list is on this page.
My child memorises everything and still loses marks. What is going wrong?
Biology exams ask students to explain a process or apply an idea to a case they have not seen. A definition answers neither. We teach the terminology attached to the process it belongs to, so there is something to reason from.
