Biology 11 and 12: Why Volume Is Not the Real Problem

Ask a student why they chose Biology over Physics and a common answer is that there is less maths. Ask them in April why the marks are lower than expected and the answer is that there is too much to remember.

Both statements share the same mistaken assumption: that Biology is a memory subject. It is not, and treating it as one is the single biggest reason capable students underperform in it.

What senior Biology actually asks for

Look at the verbs in a Biology 12 paper. Explain. Predict. Compare. Account for. Suggest why. Very few marks are available for stating a definition, and the ones that are tend to be worth one mark each.

A question like “explain why a person with damaged kidney tubules would produce large volumes of dilute urine” cannot be answered by recall unless that exact scenario was memorised. It needs a student who understands what the tubule does, and can reason forward from a change to a consequence.

That is a completely different skill from remembering the parts of a nephron, and it is rarely practised deliberately.

The structure-function link is the whole subject

If there is one habit that raises Biology marks more than any other, it is this: every time you learn a structure, immediately ask what it does and what would happen if it failed.

Villi have a large surface area – so absorption is fast – so damage to them causes malnutrition. Alveoli are thin-walled – so gas exchange is quick – so thickening them causes breathlessness. The membrane is selectively permeable – so the cell controls its contents – so a damaged membrane means the cell cannot maintain a gradient.

Learned this way, one fact becomes three answerable questions. Learned as a list of labels, it becomes one mark.

Where BC students most often lose marks

Processes learned as sequences, not systems. Photosynthesis and respiration get memorised as chains of steps. Then a question asks what happens to the rate when one input is limited, and a chain cannot answer that. Drawing the process as a diagram with inputs, outputs and controls – rather than writing it as a list – fixes this quickly.

Genetics maths. Punnett squares are straightforward; the marks are lost on probability across two traits, and on reading the question carefully enough to notice whether it asks for a proportion, a percentage or a ratio.

Terminology used loosely. Biology is precise about words in a way that catches students out. Diffusion is not osmosis. A gene is not an allele. Marks are awarded for the right term, and “the stuff moves across” scores nothing even when the student clearly understands.

Answers that are too short. A four-mark question needs four distinct points. Most students write two and assume the rest was implied. Counting marking points when checking practice answers is one of the fastest improvements available.

How to revise it properly

Not by re-reading notes, which is the default and does very little. Attempt past questions before revising a topic, so you find out which three things you cannot do instead of reviewing eleven pages evenly. Then close the book and write out what you remember, and mark the gaps in a different colour.

For Biology specifically, build linked diagrams rather than lists. If you can draw the relationship between two processes without looking, you understand it. If you can only recite them separately, you do not yet.

If Grades 8 to 10 were shaky

Biology 11 assumes a working understanding of cells, and that structure relates to function. A student who passed Science 9 by memorising will find Biology 11 unexpectedly hard, and the honest fix is to repair the foundation rather than push harder at the current unit.
