A Revision Timeline That Actually Works for BC Final Exams

Most revision timetables are beautiful and useless. They allocate hours to subjects, get followed for four days, and then quietly collapse – usually because they schedule the wrong activity. Reading notes for two hours is easy to plan and does very little.

What follows is a structure built around the two things that reliably work: retrieving information from memory, and doing real questions under real conditions.

Eight weeks out: find out what you do not know

Before planning anything, take one past paper per subject and attempt it cold. No revision first. It will be uncomfortable and the mark will be low, and that is fine – this is diagnosis, not assessment.

Then go through it and sort every lost mark into one of three piles: I did not know this, I knew this but made an error, I ran out of time. Those three need completely different responses, and almost nobody separates them.

The result is a list of specific topics, which is your actual revision plan. Not “revise Chemistry” – “equilibrium calculations, titration curves, and significant figures.”

Weeks 8 to 5: close the knowledge gaps

Work only on the first pile. For each topic: read it once, then close the book and write down everything you can remember, then check and mark the gaps in a different colour. Repeat two days later. Repeat again a week after that.

Three short passes spaced out beat one long session, and take less total time. The discomfort of trying to remember something you have half-forgotten is the mechanism, not a sign it is going badly.

Aim for three or four topics a week per subject. Fewer than that and you will not finish; more and nothing gets a second pass.

Weeks 4 to 3: mixed practice

Now the pattern changes. Instead of one topic at a time, do sets of questions drawn from across the course, jumbled deliberately.

This is the step people skip, and it matters more than any other. Doing ten equilibrium questions in a row is easy because you already know what the questions are about. In an exam, the hardest part is often working out which idea a question is testing. Mixed practice is the only way to train that.

Weeks 2 to 1: full papers, properly timed

One complete paper per subject per week, sat under exam conditions – timed, no notes, no phone, in one sitting. Then mark it against the marking guide, counting marking points.

Two things almost always come out of this. Timing problems become visible while there is still time to fix them. And most students discover they are writing about half of what a long-answer question needs, which is a technique problem that can be fixed in a week once seen.

The final week: consolidate, do not cram

New material learned in the last week rarely holds and displaces sleep, which costs more than it gains. Use the week for light retrieval of things already known, one more look at the error list, and getting the logistics right.

Sleep is not a nicety here. Memory consolidation happens during it, and a tired student loses more marks to careless errors than they gain from an extra hour of revision.

The error log

One page per subject, kept throughout. Every mistake gets a line: what the question was, what went wrong, what the correct approach is. Reviewing that page the day before an exam is worth more than any amount of re-reading, because it is a list of the mistakes you personally make.

What to cut

Highlighting. Rewriting notes neatly. Watching videos about a topic instead of doing questions on it. Group study sessions that turn into conversation. All of these feel productive and are mostly a way of avoiding the harder thing.
