Every year we meet Grade 11 students who did perfectly well in Math 10 and are now, three months into Pre-Calculus 11, genuinely lost. Nothing has gone wrong. The course changed underneath them, and nobody said so out loud.
Three things change at once
The pace. Foundations and Pre-Calculus 10 covers a manageable amount of ground with time to consolidate. Pre-Calculus 11 covers roughly twice as many distinct topics in the same ten months. A unit that would have taken three weeks takes ten days, and there is no built-in catch-up time.
The abstraction. Grade 10 problems mostly have numbers in them. Grade 11 problems increasingly have letters. “Solve for x” becomes “determine the values of k for which this equation has two distinct real roots.” That is a different kind of thinking, and it is rarely taught as a separate skill.
The assumption of fluency. This is the big one. Pre-Calculus 11 does not re-teach factoring, fractions or exponent laws. It uses them, constantly, from the first week, assuming they are automatic. A student who could factor in Grade 10 given time and a moment to think now needs to do it inside a longer problem without noticing they are doing it.
Why “they were fine last year” is not reassuring
Being fine in Grade 10 usually means being accurate. Grade 11 needs accuracy plus speed plus recognition. A student who takes forty seconds to factor a trinomial is accurate but not fluent, and forty seconds inside a six-step problem is where the wheels come off.
This is why the first sign of trouble is often time, not marks – homework taking twice as long as it used to, before any test result changes.
The topics that expose it first
Rational expressions and quadratics are usually where it becomes undeniable. Both are essentially factoring wearing a costume. A student who is shaky on factoring will find both units nearly impossible and will conclude that they cannot do quadratics.
Radicals and absolute value cause a second wave of trouble, because they need comfort with exponent laws and with the idea that a symbol can behave differently depending on sign.
What actually helps
Not more homework. Fluency work on the Grade 10 skills, run alongside the current course rather than instead of it.
In practice that means short, frequent, mixed practice – ten minutes of factoring a day rather than an hour on Sunday – until the underlying skill stops taking conscious effort. It also means mixing it back into the harder current material, so the two connect.
It usually takes three to four weeks. That feels slow when a test is coming, and it is still faster than repeatedly patching the symptom. There is more on the mechanics in closing math gaps before they compound.
The best time to act
The summer before Grade 11 is ideal – see preparing for Pre-Calculus 11 for a six-week plan. The second-best time is the first term, before the course reaches quadratics.
The worst time is April, because by then a student is trying to learn the current unit and repair three years of foundation at the same time, while the course keeps moving.
One decision worth getting right
If Pre-Calculus 11 is genuinely the wrong course – if the student has no interest in a science, engineering or business route – Foundations of Math 11 is a legitimate choice, not a lesser one.
