Preparing for Pre-Calculus 11 Over the Summer

Pre-Calculus 11 has a reputation among BC students, and it is deserved. It is the course where the workload steps up, the pace stops waiting, and the assumed knowledge from Grade 10 is used constantly without ever being re-taught.

Students who arrive in September already fluent in four or five specific skills have a very different year from students who arrive hoping to pick them up as they go.

What the course actually demands

Pre-Calculus 11 covers sequences and series, absolute value and radicals, rational expressions, trigonometry beyond right triangles, quadratic functions and equations, inequalities, and reciprocal functions. That is a lot of distinct topics in ten months.

Crucially, almost none of it re-teaches Grade 10. The course assumes you can already factor, handle fractions, manipulate exponents and rearrange an equation, and it starts using all four in week one.

The five things worth being fluent in before September

Factoring. The highest-leverage skill in the whole course. Common factor, difference of squares, simple and complex trinomials – all four types, quickly, without hesitating. Quadratics, rational expressions and solving by factoring all depend on it.

Fractions with variables. Adding, subtracting, multiplying and simplifying algebraic fractions. The rational expressions unit is essentially this unit at speed.

Exponent laws. Including negative and fractional exponents, because radicals get rewritten as fractional powers constantly.

Rearranging equations confidently. Not by memorised moves, but understanding that both sides stay balanced. Students who follow a recipe get stuck the first time the equation is shaped unusually.

Negative numbers inside brackets. It sounds trivial. It is the single most common source of lost marks in the entire course.

A realistic summer plan

This does not need to consume a holiday. Three or four hours a week for six weeks is plenty, and it works far better than one intensive fortnight.

Weeks 1-2: factoring only. All four types, mixed, until identifying which type applies takes no thought.
Weeks 3-4: algebraic fractions and exponent laws.
Week 5: rearranging equations, including formulas with several variables.
Week 6: mixed practice, deliberately jumbled, so the student has to choose the method rather than being told it.

That last week matters more than it looks. Doing twenty factoring questions in a row is easy because you already know what to do. Choosing between methods is the actual exam skill.

If the student is already behind

If Grade 10 was a struggle rather than a coast, the honest answer is that the summer is better spent on Grade 10 than on previewing Grade 11. Previewing a course on shaky foundations produces a student who has seen the material and still cannot do it.

Why this matters beyond one course

Pre-Calculus 11 is the gate to Pre-Calculus 12, which is an admission requirement for Science, Engineering, Computer Science and business programmes at UBC, SFU and elsewhere. A rough year in Grade 11 narrows options in Grade 12 in ways that are awkward to reverse.
