There is a version of science tutoring that looks productive and achieves very little. The student brings a worksheet, the tutor works through it, the worksheet gets handed in, and everyone feels the evening went well. Three weeks later the unit test arrives and the same student cannot start question one.
The work got done. The learning did not. Here is what the difference actually looks like in practice.
Good tutoring starts from the idea, not the question
Take a standard Chemistry 11 stoichiometry problem. The unhelpful version is: convert grams to moles, use the ratio, convert back, done. The student can now do that exact question and nothing else.
The useful version starts one step earlier. Why do we convert to moles at all? Because the balanced equation is a recipe written in particles, not grams, and you cannot use a recipe until you are speaking its units. Once a student genuinely holds that idea, every stoichiometry question becomes the same question wearing different clothes – including the limiting-reagent ones that look terrifying on a test.
It builds the habit of explaining out loud
Senior science exams in BC do not mostly ask students to recall. They ask them to explain, predict and justify. “Explain what happens to the equilibrium position when the temperature is increased, and why” is not a memory question.
Students who can only recall get caught out by these. So a good session includes the student doing the talking – saying back what is happening, in their own words, badly at first. That is uncomfortable and it is the single most reliable predictor of who copes with Grade 12.
It separates “I do not understand” from “I cannot be bothered to read carefully”
A surprising share of lost marks in Physics and Chemistry are not conceptual at all. Units dropped. A negative sign lost in a rearrangement. A question that asked for two things and got one. A diagram not labelled because the student assumed it was optional.
These are habits, not gaps, and they need a different fix – a checking routine the student runs every time, until it stops being a routine and becomes how they work. Any tutor who marks these as “careless” and moves on is leaving marks on the table every single exam.
It works from the actual course, not a generic programme
BC Science 8 to 10 is a broad survey. Physics 11, Chemistry 11 and Biology 11 are specialist courses that assume the survey stuck. A student who coasted through Science 9 without ever really understanding what a mole, a force or a cell membrane is will hit Grade 11 and find that the pace has doubled and the assumed knowledge has tripled.
That is why we treat Science tutoring for Grades 8 to 10 as preparation rather than remediation. It is far cheaper, in time and money, to fix Grade 9 in Grade 9.
What progress should look like
Within a few weeks you should hear more specific complaints. “I do not get chemistry” becomes “I keep messing up the mole ratio when there are two reactants.” That is progress even before the mark moves, because a specific problem can be solved and a global one cannot.
You should also see the student attempt harder questions without being told to. Confidence in science is mostly the accumulated memory of having got unstuck before.
