Families pay for tutoring expecting a higher mark. That is fair. But the mark is a side effect, and if it is the only thing a tutor is aiming at, the improvement rarely survives the next course.
Tutoring that works changes something more durable: how the student approaches a problem they have not seen before. Here is what that involves.
Diagnosis before delivery
Almost every struggling student has a specific, findable gap. Not “weak at maths” – something precise, like never having become fluent with negative fractions, or never having understood what a variable represents rather than how to manipulate one.
Finding it takes a session or two of watching the student work and asking why they did each step. Skipping that stage means teaching the visible symptom, which is why so much tutoring produces a good week followed by the same problem in a new topic.
The student does the work
The most common failure in tutoring is a tutor who is too helpful. It feels productive – the tutor explains beautifully, the student nods, the page fills up. But the student has watched somebody else solve a problem, which is roughly as useful as watching somebody else exercise.
A good session is uncomfortable in small doses. The student is the one holding the pen, getting stuck, and being allowed to stay stuck for a moment before help arrives. That pause is where the learning happens.
Explanations from first principles, not from procedure
There are two ways to teach almost anything. One is a sequence of steps. The other is why the steps exist. The first is faster and collapses the moment a question is worded unusually.
Take completing the square. Taught as a procedure, it is six steps to memorise and forget. Taught as “we are forcing this expression into a perfect square so we can undo it with a square root”, it becomes something the student can reconstruct in an exam even after forgetting the sequence.
This is slower at the start. It is much faster by March.
Deliberate practice on the right things
Practice is not the same as doing more questions. Twenty questions on a skill the student has already mastered builds nothing. Six questions on the exact thing they keep getting wrong, spread over three sessions rather than done in one sitting, builds a lot.
Spacing matters more than volume. So does mixing: once a skill is solid in isolation, it needs to appear inside longer problems where the student has to recognise that it is needed.
Feedback that names the error type
“Wrong, try again” is close to useless. Useful feedback names what went wrong: this is a sign error, this is a misread question, this is a concept you have not got yet, this one you actually knew and rushed.
Students who can classify their own mistakes start catching them before the tutor does. That is the point at which they need us less, which is the point of the exercise.
Consistency over intensity
Two hours twice a week, every week, beats a burst of cramming before a test almost every time. Skills need to be revisited while they are still half-forgotten – that is when the revisiting does the most good.
It is also why we run small-group sessions as two two-hour blocks a week rather than shorter, more frequent ones. An hour disappears into settling in and finding the page.
How to tell it is working
Before the marks move, listen to the language. “I am bad at chemistry” turning into “I keep losing the mole ratio when there are two reactants” is the change that matters. Global statements cannot be acted on. Specific ones can.
