Physics 12 Vectors: Where the Marks Quietly Disappear

Students arriving in Physics 12 after a strong Physics 11 mark often have a difficult first month, and they usually blame the topics. Relativity, gravitational fields, electric potential - the names sound harder than kinematics and circuits.

In our experience the topics are not the problem. The problem is that Physics 12 works in two dimensions almost everywhere, and two dimensions means components, and components mean signs.

What actually changes

The BC Physics 12 curriculum runs through frames of reference, special relativity, static equilibrium, uniform circular motion, gravitation, electric fields and potential, magnetism, electromagnetic induction, and momentum. Look at that list and one thing is common to nearly all of it: the quantities are vectors, and they rarely point along a convenient axis.

In Physics 11 a great deal of the course could be done with positive and negative on a single line. In Physics 12 a student is resolving into components, adding them, and then interpreting a negative result. A minus sign that means “to the left” and a minus sign that means “the charge is negative” look identical on the page and mean entirely different things.

The habit that fixes it

Declare the positive direction in writing, before any numbers, on every single question. Two words in the margin: “right positive”, “up positive”, “towards the centre positive”.

It looks trivial. It is the difference between a student who can check their own work and one who cannot, because once the convention is written down, a negative answer becomes information rather than an anxiety. A negative velocity means the object is moving left. A negative work value means energy left the system. Without a stated convention, neither statement can be made.

For circular motion in particular, choosing “towards the centre positive” resolves most of the confusion about centripetal force in one stroke. The force is not a new force. It is the net of the forces already there, pointing inward.

Three places it bites hardest

  • Momentum in two dimensions. Conservation has to hold separately in each direction. Students who solve it as one equation lose the question, not the mark.
  • Electric potential energy. Two negative charges, a negative potential, and a negative work value in one question. Each minus sign has a different origin.
  • Static equilibrium with torques. Clockwise or anticlockwise positive is a choice, and it must be made once and held.

Graphical methods are marked too

“Graphical methods in physics” appears as a content item in both Physics 11 and Physics 12. Students treat graphs as a way of presenting an answer. The curriculum treats them as a method of getting one - a slope is a quantity, an area is a quantity, and a lot of Physics 12 questions are asking for exactly that.

When a question gives a graph and no numbers, it is asking for a slope or an area. That single observation recovers marks on most papers.

Where to start

If a Physics 12 mark has dropped from the Physics 11 mark, we look at signs and components before we look at anything else. It is usually a two or three session fix rather than a term-long one, and it lifts every unit at the same time rather than one at a time.

Physics 12 also leans hard on Pre-Calculus 12 trigonometry. If the trig is shaky, that surfaces in the first session too.

The five-line check before the exam

We give Physics 12 students a short written checklist to run before starting any long question. It is not a study technique, it is a marking-scheme technique.

  • State the positive direction. Two words in the margin.
  • Draw the situation, even for a question that seems purely numerical.
  • Resolve into components before combining anything.
  • Check that the sign of the answer means something physical, and say what.
  • Check units, then significant figures.

Students resist this until they see a marked paper where four of five lost marks were caught by one of those five lines.

Relativity is not the hard part

Frames of reference, the postulates of special relativity and relativistic effects all appear early in Physics 12 and they frighten students out of proportion. In practice the unit is short, the mathematics is a single factor applied to a handful of quantities, and the marks are reliable once a student is clear about which observer measures which quantity.

The genuinely demanding units are gravitation, electric fields and potential, and electromagnetic induction, because each involves an inverse relationship, a direction, and an energy account at the same time. That is three things to hold at once, and it is why the sign discipline above is worth building in September rather than April.

What we would do first

If a Physics 12 mark has slipped, we ask for the last two marked papers rather than a description of the problem. Sign errors, component errors and unit errors look completely different on paper and are almost indistinguishable in conversation.
